Leaders act. They make decisions. Leaders engage and align themselves with the goals of an organization, cause or belief of the group. But above all else they act and they lead others to act. We are all measured by our actions, our ownership of those actions and we are also measured by the things we fail to do.

As a business people make promises to those they lead every day. According to a recent study condcted by CNN and Pew Charitable, 91% of the American workforce says that one of the “most important attributes of a good leader is that they will act in a timely manner when making decisions” yet only 82% of those same respondents believe their current leaders act in a timely manner when it comes to decision making skills. An astonishing 77% follow up that statement by saying that their leader ” oftentimes fails to act at all.”

Good leaders have core and significant attributes:

1. They Engage: they are able to engage themselves and their teams to believe in the mission and deliver on the gold. They motivate and inspire others to great results.
2. They make decisions: What more can you say? They don’t sit on the sidelines, they don’t wait for consensus, they make prudent but swift and calculated decisions that are for the benefit of the business, cause or individual.
3. They act: The take action swiftly, without hesitation but always with forethought and confidence. But they always act.
4. They take responsibility: Leaders own results, good or bad and share the victories. They are responsible for the moves forward and the failures to move. Leaders are able bodied responders.

We set expectations and we measure results in everything we do – our business lives, our personal achievements, the scores our children make – every day. Our actions should reach far beyond those measurements and be supported by behaviors that demonstrate our efforts to improve our weaknesses, teach the responsibility and accountability to improve ourselves and others, and to praise the results of that improvement. Missing any of these attributes or one of these steps or the countless others we must exhibit as leaders is truly how we will be measured…

Do the right thing. Engage. Make decisions. Act. Be responsible.

What are you NOT doing today?

listen. learn. share. repeat.

Fewer people and lower morale, what’s a girl to do?

So many people are experiencing the emotional void and burden of taking on greater responsibilities in our current economy. As a result of cost-cutting, downsizings, hiring freezes or early retirements (in some cases delayed retirement), many companies may find themselves with holes in the workforce and a morale that is difficult to work around.

For example, in some cases, employees who were already assigned to a team may have been on a layoff list. In other cases, consultants or contract help who were contributing their talents to organizational efforts may have been slashed from the budget. The bottom line remains the same: fewer employees wearing more hats whether they fit or not.

If you find your self in this position and you most likely will to varying degrees either as a team member, team leader or budding business owner, there are solutions. Ordinarily, the music would swell, and the solution band would play – instead the practicality of the situation calls for behaviors and actions that you can help suggest, direct and even control your future.

When this scenario occurs, companies may want to broaden the search for internal talent in order to redirect the right people to the right projects. This is the perfect chance for you to volunteer for a new project, team, or completely new area of the business. This not only makes you a “team player” but it creates a value equation that puts you in the plus column. It also gives you a chance to shine and learn new skills.

Who knows social media and the capabilities of the virtual world better than you? This is one of those pivotal moments in history where you can set the course for yourself and quite frankly, how your business can be run. Establishing virtual teams, taking the best and the brightest from many locations can help in this situation, expanding the population of potential team members beyond those sharing physical workspace. In fact, more than two-thirds of respondents to a recent Institute for Corporate Productivity survey (2008) on teams said they see their reliance on virtual teams growing in importance over the next three years. I think this will move faster in its importance and you can be at the forefront of your company by setting the stage

For example, one way to sidestep productivity losses after downsizing is to keep progress moving on a project by using team members in different time zones. A well-orchestrated process can ensure that “handoffs” are streamlined and that “the brief overlaps in the working hours of the team members” are fully leveraged, according to Karen Cvitkovich (2008), a managing director with Aperian Global. Such “follow the sun” scheduling can allow companies to take advantage of widely dispersed talent while also providing team members with better work/life balance.

Another way to help employers corral talent located at different sites into one team is via Web conferencing live or accessible information streamed and available at any given time. You’re trying to create a sense of community … in a physically distributed environment. With technology facilitating such meetings, and assisting the leveraging of communication amongst team members, employees who survive a layoff may appreciate this sense of a larger network of colleagues rather than a shrinking one.

I get a zen feeling just talking about it. Wanna have a web conference? It’s good for me. You?

listen. learn. share. repeat.™

g.

There are not many times that I let words define or confine me. They are often descriptors, adjectives to the person I am.

As I have read more of the book Aspire by Kevin Hall, and Speed of Trust by Stephen M.R. Covey I have come to realize something I already knew but could never find, ironically enough, the right word to communicate what I did or desired to do. Kevin’s book teaches us the richness of the layers of words and the profound impact they can have in finding your purpose and at their very core are even more hidden meanings that bring even stronger richness and fulfillment to the word and its use.

Through Stephen I have learned that trust is the beginning of all things relational. And that whether it is personal or professional it need not be interpreted as weak but as solid and a foundation to which all human interaction begins.

Words have meaning. So when I hear people describe themselves as they do in this video, there are often biases as code for lost, bootstrapping, renegade. I see it as just one layer of the foundation of many words and actions and ultimately results.

You tell me. Is this how you see yourself or your compatriots? Offer up a definition of your own. Trust me, but trust me fast, there will be no judgments – you have my word on it.

And btw – thanks to Brian Tomkins for bringing me art in words.

listen. learn. share. repeat

Watch the video to see…

I know what it's like to feel trapped. Trapped in a career you don't want, a relationship of convenience, the meatloaf is always overcooked. But you are only trapped or overcooked if YOU allow yourself to be.

You know it's true. And you know it's not easy. The easy part is to do nothing about and just be angry and miserable about things and pass blame or judgment or at a minimum ignore it like a bad stomach ache. "Maybe if I just stay in bed it will all go away…"

Well guess what? When you wake up the career is now less a career and more like (ugh) a job. The relationship of convenience is just a U-Haul away. And the overcooked meatloaf? You remember Ramen noodles? So get over it and get after it.

Wake up. It's Monday. And here are some things to go with Venti Soy Latte and your two Bavarian Cremes from Dunkin Donuts. (Blatant product beg, Jon Luther!)

1. Words to live by are just that – words – unless you live by them. So if you plan to 'do something about your current situation' start planning today. That means either decide to engage in the career you have and determine whether you are willing to put in effort to put your left foot in or don't let the door hit you on the way out. YOU decide based on how you manage your thoughts, which control your behaviors and attitude which in turn become word that are alive.
2. Values are all we have – they are our internal currency. If you want to lead a life a certain way. Be a woman of honor and integrity. A man of purpose and empathy. A person who is always moving forward because of their own calling and not not blaming others when the 'promise' lives on unfulfilled. Then you are true to your values. Once compromised, it's worthless, meaningless. You are compromised. YOU control the values you want to live by and honor. If you value happiness. Then don't give away your bank!
3. We judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their actions. WHOA! Intention does not mean anything. It's like being close in horseshoes. Intention if you look at the origin in the Latin intentio means to 'stretch purpose'. Looky there – there's that word again. PURPOSE.
But intentions are stretching it not delivering it, yet we will judge
others by their action. I say we put a stop to that right now. You want
to live a life of your dreams, measure it by your actions, not what you
intend it to be. My definition of intend? It-never-ends…
4. Good things happen when they make them happen. It's not likely that you are going to sit on the couch eating Boston Creme Dunkin Donuts (see how I did this) watching cartoons and a million dollars will magically appear. Or your business that you started a year ago will get better even though you are still fighting with th landlord over who will spend the $200 for the extra lights. No good things happen when we focus our energy, our mental acuity, and our behaviors to drive to a positive result. And YOU are the one that makes them happen.

You control more than you give yourself credit for. But that also means you also have more responsibility than you realize. But the good news is your in charge.

So leave the stompin' in the school yard.

listen. learn. share. repeat.
